The numbers are off the charts – the U.S. staffing industry hit a record total revenue of $157.4 billion in 2021, according to Staffing Industry Analysts, representing a 16% growth from the year before. “The bounce back in the staffing industry this year highlights the resilience and agility of staffing firms to successfully serve their clients despite challenging and rapidly evolving conditions,” said Timothy Landhuis, SIA’s director of research, North America. “In particular, with job openings currently at historic record highs, the US economy has never needed the staffing industry more than it does now.”
Indeed, all segments of the staffing industry saw double-digit growth in 2021, and that’s not expected to slow down anytime soon. SIA’s report went on to project that the staffing industry revenue growth for 2022 will increase 4% as the economy stabilizes. “With a record 10.1 million job openings (as of June), the US staffing industry is seeing levels of jobs orders never before witnessed,” the report says.
The Covid Comeback
Like nearly every business over the past two years, the staffing industry saw a hit due to the impacts of the pandemic. SIA, for instance, estimated the staffing and recruitment industry suffered a 11% decrease in 2020 from 2019 as a result of the massive layoffs, unemployment and economic upheaval brought on by the pandemic.
But a comeback didn’t take long. Ironically, because of the pandemic, Americans reevaluated their work-life balance and left their jobs in numbers never before seen, in what’s now known as “The Great Resignation.” Suddenly, millions of Americans were looking for new and better employment opportunities, and staffing agencies were there to rise up to the task. SIA found the staffing industry immediately rebounded, with a revenue growth of 16% in 2021, outpacing 2020’s losses. What’s more, the industry was only expected to grow, showing an estimated 4% improvement for 2022.
